Introduction
The role of a teacher librarian is to support and enhance the learning and teaching process within a school. Teacher librarians are responsible for managing the school library, curating resources, and collaborating with classroom teachers to integrate information literacy skills and research into the curriculum. They also promote a love of reading and literature, provide guidance on digital and media literacy, and support students in developing critical thinking and research skills. Additionally, they often play a key role in implementing technology and fostering a culture of inquiry and innovation within the school community.
Faculty Leadership
The library is managed by an appointed Teacher Librarian, Mr Matthew Devlin.
Faculty Overview
The Library has a varied range of learning resources and recreational resources available for use by students and staff. These resources include fiction and non-fiction books, magazines, digital newspapers, audio-visual resources, current affair articles, photocopying, printing and computer workstations.
The library recently completed a refurbishment. It has x4 teaching and learning areas which includes a new multi-purpose room, access to an outdoor area, a fresh and vibrant senior study area and modern furniture throughout.
Curriculum and Programs
PopFest – An annual event where staff and students dress up as their favourite pop culture character and head to the library. The day often involves fun activities and promotes how books influence pop culture. It is held every August, during Book Week.
ClickView - The library manages ClickView for all the students and staff. This online digital database has videos and documentaries all linked to the school curriculum. You will be prompted to enter your school email address, after which you will need to select Bomaderry High School.
Accelerated Reading - We actively promote reading and the library is proud to support the whole school program called Accelerated Reading by Renaissance. Students regularly visit the library and borrow books aimed at their level of ability.
“At its heart, Accelerated Reader is simple. A student reads a book, takes an online quiz and gets immediate feedback. Students respond to regular feedback and are motivated to make progress with their reading skills”.
Community – The library hosts or facilitates many community events such as career expos, debating teams, defence groups and a variety of health and well-being information sessions. The P&C meetings are often held in the library, every second Thursday of the month.
Student Support
Libraries play a crucial role in supporting student learning and well-being in several ways:
Access to Resources: Libraries provide students with access to a wide range of resources, including books, digital materials, and online databases, to support their learning across various subjects and interests.
Information Literacy: Librarians teach students how to effectively find, evaluate, and use information, promoting critical thinking and research skills that are essential for academic success.
Safe and Inclusive Spaces: Libraries often serve as safe and inclusive spaces where students can study, collaborate, and explore their interests in a welcoming environment.
Technology Access: Many libraries provide access to computers, internet, and other digital resources, ensuring that all students have equal opportunities to engage with technology for their learning.
Mental Health and Well-being Support: Libraries may offer resources and programs focused on mental health and well-being, such as mindfulness activities, stress-relief materials, and access to information on relevant support services.
Overall, libraries are integral to fostering a positive learning environment and promoting the well-being of students by providing access to resources, promoting information literacy, offering safe spaces, and supporting technology access and mental health resources.
