Debating
Bomaderry High School has a strong tradition excellence in public speaking and debating. Debating and public speaking offers the opportunity to develop important life skills and refines the ability to think and present logically and confidently in front of an audience.
Bomaderry High School students have the opportunity to participate in skills workshops and participate in transition days with our feeder primary schools. They also have the opportunity to compete in stage related debating and public speaking competitions organized by the NSW Performing Arts Unit. These competitions include the Premiere's Debating Challenge for Years 7/8, 9/10, 11/12, as well as the Legacy Public Speaking Competion for Years 9/10 and The Plain English Speaking Award for Years 10-12.
Students at Bomaderry High School have the opportunity to attend the Regional Debating Camp held each August at Batemans Bay.
Recent high achievers include Claire Honeywood who represented the school in 2015 at the Year 10 State Debating Championships at Sydney University. Claire was selected as part of the Illawarra/South East Year 10 representative team which won all of the competition pool events, finally ranking 3rd in NSW.
Tournament of minds (TOM)
Tournament of minds is one of the fastest growing international school programs with the involvement of thousands of participants.
Teams solve challenges from a choice of disciplines:
- science technology
- engineering maths
- social sciences
- language literature.
TOM aims to enhance the potential of our youth by developing diverse skills, enterprise, time management, and the discipline to work collaboratively within a competitive environment.
Mathematics competition
Australian mathematics competition is held in July. It is designed to be accessible to all students, not just the mathematically gifted. It has an emphasis on problem solving, a valuable life skill, and the questions are designed to be fun for the student and to encourage them in the study of mathematics.
