Our extra-curricular highlights

Korean sister school

Bomaderry High School has developed a sister school relationship with Yangpyeong High School in Korea, offered to the school through the Asia Education Foundation.

The first stage of our Korea sister school program, was in 2016, when Mrs Mehic travelled to Yangpeong High School in South Korea as part of the first stage of our Korea sister school program. Mrs Mehic taught classes about Australian culture and also observed lessons in various subjects.

Students at our school have since been involved in writing to the students in Yangpeong and learning about their cultural.

Then in October/ November 2023, a selection of students and staff from our sister school, Yangpeong High School, came to Australia and Bomaderry High School for a visit. Students and staff from BHS introduced them to some of our culture, favourite school subjects, food, local environment and more.

See here for a Youtube video on Yangpeong High School visit to Bomaderry High School.

Since then, we have had a selection of students from our sister school, Yangpyeong High School, visit us here in Australia and at Bomaderry High School.

And then in the 2024 September school holidays, 23 students and 9 staff from Bomaderry High School had an amazing overseas excursion to South Korea. Students had the opportunity to visit many attractions, indulge in local cuisine, and, best of all, connect with our sister school, Yangpyeong High School. The memories created during this excursion will last a lifetime.

CAPA opportunities

BHS provides creative and performing arts students with a diverse range of engaging, challenging, and extension opportunities designed to nurture high-potential and gifted learners. While not all performance experiences listed below occur every year, selections are tailored to the specific interests and strengths of each cohort to maximise student growth and achievement. In 2025, our Junior Dance Company was selected to perform at the Regional Dance Festival, showcasing advanced talent and dedication. In 2024, students participated in multiple performances for Southern Stars, further developing their skills in a professional setting. Additionally, in 2022, our Wakkakirri Team earned awards at this prestigious national competition, reflecting the high calibre of our students’ creative and performing arts.

2026 French Club

After introducing French as the Stage 4 Language in 2025, we have seen many students thrive and seek opportunities to extend their French language skills. In 2026, Ms Murphy will offer students the opportunity to expand their French language skills through the introduction of the BHS French Club.

School Mural Project

Each year, our Visual Arts students have the opportunity to contribute to the ongoing development of murals and installations around the school.

Junior Dance Company

In 2025, our Junior Dance Company (Stage 4) worked diligently on developing their technical dance skills. This determination and hard work resulted in their selection for the Regional Dance Festival.

Visual Arts H Elective Exhibitions

The Visual Arts H Elective ‘Art Attack’ provides students with an opportunity to engage in practices that simulate a real artist. We photograph and document our surroundings, work from the visual world and create artworks that communicate a personal point of view. Working with media such as paint on canvas, charcoal, printmaking and stencil art, we aim to immerse ourselves in the art world. As part of the experience, we present projects from our various topics at exhibitions hosted by the BHS Library, where the main foyer becomes a gallery for young artists.

ISER Performing Arts Ensemble

The Illawarra South East Regional Performing Arts Ensemble is a touring group of performers, including a stage band, dancers and vocalists. Students from around the Illawarra audition and, if selected, tour and perform at various public schools over three days once a term. BHS is fortunate to have had our students selected for this ensemble over the last few years, which highlights the importance of the performing arts in the lives of our young people.

Southern Stars

Southern Stars is an annual performance held at the WIN Entertainment Centre. Public schools from across NSW participate in a showcase of dance, drama and music featuring students from Kindergarten to Year 12. BHS has been fortunate enough to participate in Southern Stars over the years. In 2024, we had students join the Mass Dance Ensemble, the Rising Stars Disability Ensemble, and the Aboriginal Dance Ensemble.

Wakakirri

Wakakirri is a nationwide Festival for Australian schools that provides a platform for students to express their thoughts, ideas, and aspirations through the art of storytelling and dance. Inspired by the belief that great stories can inspire change, Wakakirri is designed to promote student engagement and well-being in schools through the creation and performance of captivating Story-Dances.

National Art Sponsorship Opportunities

Arts National Shoalhaven is a volunteer-run, not-for-profit organisation that offers nine illustrated lectures and a half-day interest session each year. Their presentations cover a diverse range of arts topics and feature expert speakers from the UK Arts Society and Australia. Their goal is to connect the Shoalhaven community with the arts and with one another. In 2025, Arts National Shoalhaven offered to support four of our students in their music studies financially. These students were given the opportunity to perform at various lectures throughout the year to develop their musical skills further.
