Shoalhaven Tutorial Centre

The Shoalhaven Tutorial Centre (STC) is a specialist regional facility located across the road from Bomaderry High School, dedicated to supporting students with behaviour difficulties through expert, strengths-based programs. Our centre offers a tailored two-term program designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills to regulate their emotions and behaviours positively and proactively. Each class is capped at seven students and staffed by experienced expert teachers and school learning support officers (SLSO) trained in trauma informed practice using the Berry Street Education Model. We prioritise creating a safe and predictable environment for students and their families.

Wellbeing

At the heart of our work is a trauma-informed, strengths-based Wellbeing program that helps students understand their reactions to stress and develop strategies to maintain a sense of safety inside and outside the classroom. Wellbeing lessons are integrated into the daily timetable and include engaging physical activities to help regulate the nervous system and prepare students for learning. These lessons also teach students how to monitor and manage their emotions, reactions, and behaviours effectively.

Key workers

Each student at STC is assigned a Key Worker who advocates for the student and serves as the primary contact with parents and carers. The Key Worker conducts regular one-on-one check ins daily to monitor progress toward learning and personal goals. They also collect and analyse data on Literacy, Numeracy, as well as Social and Emotional indicators, and liaise with the student’s mainstream school to coordinate a smooth transition back to their census schools

Curriculum

Students at the STC follow the mainstream curriculum with appropriate adjustments to meet individual needs, ensuring they remain on track with their year group. The curriculum includes all mandatory courses experienced in mainstream schools:

  • English
  • Maths
  • Science
  • PDHPE
  • HSIE
  • Geography

Friday challenge program

Recognising the importance of physical exercise and time in nature for wellbeing, the Friday Challenge is a key part of our program. Every Friday, students participate in outdoor activities in the beautiful Shoalhaven surrounds, using our mini bus to access different venues. Activities include bushwalking, fishing, hiking, indoor climbing, and learn to surf. This key iniative in our program supporting student growth the benefits can be implemented inside and outside the classroom.

Student-parent/carer-teacher conferences

We believe strong partnerships with parents and carers are critical to our students’ success. To foster open communication, we hold Student-Parent/Carer-Teacher Conferences twice each term. These meetings set goals for learning and social-emotional development and review student progress to ensure continuous positive growth.

The Shoalhaven Tutorial Centre is committed to providing personalised, strengths-based support and a collaborative approach to help students thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
